- 16-inch kids bike with training wheels: the current product page lists included training wheels, front and rear disc brakes, and an approximate saddle height of 50–60 cm. Read our training-wheel setup guide.
- 20-inch kids bike with gears: the current product page lists a Shimano shifter and rear derailleur, front and rear disc brakes, and an approximate saddle height of 60–75 cm. Read our first-shifting checklist.
Seller-listed saddle heights are a starting point, not an age-based fit guarantee. Check your child’s inside leg, reach to the handlebars and ability to use the brakes. Explore our kids balance bikes if your child is still learning to balance.
Kids Bikes for Growing Riders Across Australia
Choosing the right kids bike is not just about picking a colour your child loves. The best ride is one that matches their stage, confidence, height, and the way they actually ride day to day. At Gear Force, we believe great kids bikes should feel exciting for children and reassuring for parents — easy to handle, comfortable to ride, and built for real family life.
Whether you are shopping for a first bike for kids, upgrading to a bigger pedal model, or comparing bikes for kids by age, our collection is designed to make the process simpler. From beginner-friendly options that help young riders build confidence, to larger bikes for more independent school-age riders, every choice should support comfort, control, and long-term enjoyment.
Parents often start by searching for a bike for 4 year old, then quickly realise fit matters more than guesswork. The same goes for a bike for 5 year old, bike for 6 year old, or an upgrade for older kids who are ready for more speed, better braking, and a lighter frame. That is why we recommend looking at riding stage first, then narrowing down by age, height, and confidence level.
If your child is still learning balance, a kids balance bike can be a smart first step before moving into pedals. If they are ready for a bigger ride, our kids bike collection helps you compare options with more clarity so you can choose with confidence.
How to Choose the Right Kids Bike
A good kids bike should help a child feel in control from the first ride. That means a bike that is not too heavy, not too tall, and not too complicated. The right fit makes starting, stopping, turning, and building confidence much easier.
When comparing a new bike, these are the features that matter most:
- Lightweight frame for easier handling
- Age-appropriate wheel size and geometry
- Comfortable seat and handlebar position
- Stable tyres with good grip
- Reliable braking that suits the rider’s stage
- Strong construction for everyday family use
A lighter bike usually gives younger riders a better experience because it is easier to steer, push, and recover if they wobble. For beginners, this can make a huge difference in how quickly they gain confidence.
Shop Kids Bikes by Age and Stage
Bike for 4 Year Old
If you are shopping for a bike for 4 year old, the main priority should be confidence, comfort, and easy control. At this age, many children are still developing balance and coordination, so a lightweight bike with a low stand-over height can help them feel safer and more in control. A manageable frame, comfortable seat, and stable design can make those first rides much more enjoyable and less intimidating for both kids and parents.
Bike for 5 Year Old
Choosing a bike for 5 year old often means finding the right balance between fun and progression. Some children are ready for a pedal bike with more independence, while others still need a simple setup that feels steady and easy to handle. This is a stage where fit matters a lot. A bike that is too large or too heavy can reduce confidence, while the right size can encourage smoother learning and longer rides.
Bike for 6 Year Old
A bike for 6 year old should offer a little more responsiveness while still being easy to control. At this stage, many kids are becoming more confident riders and may start using their bike more often around parks, footpaths, and family outings. A well-fitted bike with practical comfort features can help support better control, safer braking, and a more enjoyable riding experience overall.
Bike for 7 Year Old
When choosing a bike for 7 year old, it helps to think about how your child likes to ride. Some children want a simple everyday bike for fun around the neighbourhood, while others are ready for something that feels more adventurous and capable. The best option is usually one that feels sturdy, comfortable, and easy enough to ride confidently without becoming too bulky or difficult to manage.
Bike for 8 Year Old
A bike for 8 year old should give growing riders a sense of independence without sacrificing fit and control. Parents often start thinking more about long-term value at this stage, but choosing a bike that is too big too soon can make riding harder rather than easier. A practical fit, stable frame design, and room for minor adjustments can help your child enjoy the bike now while still getting good use from it as they grow.
Bike for 9 Year Old
If you are looking for a bike for 9 year old, it is often worth focusing on ride quality as much as appearance. Kids at this age usually notice how a bike feels when turning, pedalling, braking, and riding longer distances. A bike that supports stronger riding habits with better comfort and handling can make a big difference in how often they ride and how much they enjoy it.
Older or Taller Riders (10+ Years)
Our current range centres on the 16-inch and 20-inch bikes. For older or taller riders, check your child's height, inside-leg measurement and riding experience against the product details and size guide before choosing. If you're unsure about fit, get in touch and we'll help you compare the listed measurements.
Why Families Choose Gear Force for Kids Bikes
At Gear Force, we understand that parents are not just buying a bike — they are choosing a product that shapes confidence, independence, and outdoor fun. That is why our approach focuses on practical value, safer everyday riding, and bikes that feel right for real Australian families.
We know that shopping for a kids bike can feel overwhelming when every model starts to look similar. Our goal is to make the decision easier with a collection built around what parents actually care about: the right fit, the right stage, and a smoother path from first ride to confident rider.
Whether you are buying a first bike for kids or upgrading to a larger model, Gear Force is here to help you choose with more clarity and less guesswork.
From First Balance to Bigger Rides
Not every child starts in the same place. Some begin with a balance bike and move to pedals quickly. Others need more time and confidence-building before they are ready for a larger ride. That is completely normal.
A well-chosen kids bike should support the rider they are now while helping them grow into the rider they are becoming. That is why many families start with a smaller learning option, then move through stages based on confidence and fit rather than age alone.
If your child is still learning coordination, balance, or braking, starting with the right style of bike can make the journey more enjoyable for both the child and the parent.

FAQs
1. How do I choose the right kids bike size?
The right kids bike size depends on more than age alone. Height, inseam, and confidence all matter. A bike should let your child start, stop, and balance comfortably without feeling stretched or overwhelmed.
2. What is the best bike for kids who are learning to ride?
For beginners, the best bike for kids is usually one that feels lightweight, stable, and easy to control. Many younger riders do well on a kids balance bike before moving to pedals, while others are ready for a simple first pedal bike.
3. Should I buy a kids bike based on age or height?
Age is a useful starting point, but height and fit are more important. A child searching for a bike for 5 year old may need a different size from another five-year-old depending on their height and confidence.
4. Is a balance bike better than training wheels?
For many children, a balance bike helps them learn steering and balance more naturally than training wheels. It can make the transition to pedals smoother because they build confidence first before worrying about pedalling.
5. How do I know when my child needs a bigger bike?
If your child looks cramped, struggles to pedal comfortably, or no longer feels stable and relaxed on their current bike, it may be time to size up. A larger bike should improve comfort and control without feeling too big or too heavy.
