How to Set Up Training Wheels: A Parent’s Three-Stage Check
Training wheels work best when they are treated as a temporary learning aid, not as a substitute for bike fit, working brakes or close supervision. The useful question is not simply “are they attached?” It is whether the whole bike is secure, the child can control it and the supports behave as the manufacturer intended.
This guide gives parents a three-stage check for a newly assembled kids’ bike: inspect it while stationary, walk it through a slow test, then observe a short practice ride. Keep the supplied manual beside you. Training-wheel hardware varies, so use the product instructions or a qualified bicycle mechanic for the final mounting position and fastener torque.
The quick answer: set up the whole bike, not only the supports
- Confirm fit: the child should be able to straddle the bike and reach the controls without stretching.
- Follow the assembly sequence: install and secure the training-wheel brackets exactly as the bike manual shows.
- Check both sides: compare bracket position, fasteners and wheel movement before the child gets on.
- Test the bicycle: check tyres, brakes, chain, pedals, seat, handlebar and helmet as well as the supports.
- Practise somewhere controlled: start on a flat, open area away from traffic, driveways and steep slopes.
Do not copy a “universal” gap or bolt setting from another bike. Some designs are meant to let the bicycle lean slightly; others specify a different position. The manual for the exact bike is the deciding source.
Use this three-stage training-wheel check

Write down what happened rather than changing several things at once. “Left support touched first on every right turn” is more useful than “felt wobbly”. One observation, one check against the manual and one adjustment at a time makes the result easier to assess.
Stage 1: do the stationary setup check
Start with rider fit
A training wheel cannot correct a bike that is too large. The Raising Children Network bicycle safety guide says a child’s bike should suit their age, size and ability. Its practical fit check is that the child can straddle the bike and touch the ground with both feet.
The current Gear Force 16-inch kids’ bike with training wheels lists an adjustable 50–60 cm saddle, a roughly 75 cm handlebar height, dual disc brakes, a full chain guard and included supports. Those specifications are useful screening information, but test the actual rider position after assembly. The child should be able to reach the grips and brake controls without locking their elbows or hitting the handlebar with their knees.
Install the brackets from the supplied instructions
Identify the left and right parts before tightening anything. Check the manual’s diagram for bracket orientation, washers, locking hardware and any prohibited mounting points. Make sure each bracket sits flat where specified and that no cable, chain or moving part is trapped.
Use the tool and tightening method named in the instructions. If the manual gives a torque value, use a suitable torque wrench. If it does not, do not invent one or assume a value from a different model. Ask Gear Force or a bicycle shop to confirm the assembly.
When both sides are fitted, compare them from behind on a level floor. Check that:
- the brackets face the same way and occupy matching mounting positions;
- all required washers, nuts and retainers are present;
- neither support wheel touches the chain, tyre, brake hardware or frame;
- both small wheels turn freely and are undamaged; and
- the rear bicycle wheel is secure and centred according to the manual.
Complete a whole-bike safety check
Transport Victoria’s pre-ride guidance says to check tyre inflation and wear, make sure the brakes work and confirm the chain moves freely. It also advises checking the helmet for wear or damage. Use the pressure printed on the tyre or in the bike instructions, then apply each brake while walking the bike and confirm it stops.
Also check that the seat and handlebar cannot twist, the grips and bar ends are secure, the pedals turn, the chain moves smoothly inside its guard and no fastener or sharp edge is exposed. If a component is missing, bent, cracked or loose, stop the setup and resolve it before practice.
Stage 2: walk the empty bike through a slow test
Take the bike to a flat, dry, open area. Keep the child off it while an adult rolls it slowly. Watch the rear of the bicycle from a safe position as it travels in a straight line. Then make one broad turn each way.
This test is designed to reveal an obvious installation problem before the bracket carries a rider’s weight. Stop if a support wheel jams, a bracket moves, a fastener rotates, the chain catches or the bicycle pulls because a part is rubbing. Recheck the exact assembly step rather than compensating with an unrelated adjustment.
Next, repeat the brake test at walking pace. Each brake should work as the bike instructions describe, without a training-wheel bracket interfering with the wheel or cable. A support wheel does not shorten stopping distance or teach brake control, so the child still needs to practise stopping deliberately.
Stage 3: observe a short first ride
Raising Children recommends a flat, open practice space away from traffic, with an adult present while children learn. Begin with a short lane marked by two soft cones. Have the child practise five actions in order:
- mount while the adult steadies the bike as needed;
- look ahead and begin pedalling;
- ride a straight line at a comfortable pace;
- make one wide turn each way; and
- brake, put a foot down and dismount.
Stand where you can supervise without grabbing a moving handlebar unexpectedly. End the ride if the child cannot reach the brakes, a foot slips repeatedly, the bike is too large to control, a bracket shifts or the surface is wet or obstructed.
After the first few minutes, inspect the mounting hardware again as the manual directs. New assemblies can reveal a part that was not fully seated. Do not allow a child to keep riding because the other support “still works”.
How should training wheels touch the ground?
There is no reliable one-setting answer for every bicycle. The correct position depends on the bracket design and the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid choosing a gap by eye from a social post or another family’s bike.
A useful observation is how the installed system behaves. On level ground, the rear bicycle tyre must remain the driving contact point. The supports should not bind, lift the rear tyre or make the bike uncontrollable in a gentle turn. If both supports appear to carry the bike in a way the manual does not show, or one side contacts much earlier than the other, stop and confirm the installation.
When is a child ready to remove the training wheels?
Use demonstrated control instead of a birthday. Before a trial without supports, the child should be able to start with help, pedal steadily, look where they are going, steer around a broad curve, brake on request and put a foot down calmly. They should also want to try.
Training wheels can reduce the balance practice that happens when a bike leans. A gradual next step might be more balance-bike practice or a carefully supervised session on the same correctly sized bike after the supports are removed according to the manual. If the child is fearful, cannot stop reliably or depends on a support through every turn, keep working on control rather than forcing a no-support test. A bike shop can remove or reinstall the hardware if you are unsure.
Fit a helmet and choose the practice area
Bike helmets are compulsory in Australia. Use the Gear Force kids’ helmet size finder as a measurement aid, then follow the helmet instructions and current rules. Raising Children advises a snug, undamaged helmet with the chinstrap fastened and not twisted, plus enclosed footwear and visible clothing.
Practise away from roads, active driveways, crowds, water, steep slopes and fixed obstacles. Local rules for paths and footpaths vary, so check your state road authority and council before moving beyond a private practice area.
Training-wheel setup troubleshooting

Keep the setup record with the bike
Take one photo of each bracket after the setup passes, then note the date and any manual-specified checks. Repeat the whole-bike check before riding and after transport, a fall or a noticeable change in handling.
